A head of a coaching centre was arrested for drug peddling after the anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing of the Ludhiana police commissionerate recovered 30-gm heroin for his possession on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Baljit Singh alias Sonu, 28, of Kuliyewal village of Ludhiana. The accused holds masters in business administration (MBA) degree and runs a tutorial under the name of Shivam Coaching Centre in the Jamalpur area.
The accused told to the police that he used to smuggle drugs to mint money.
Sub-inspector Harbans Singh, in-charge at the anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing, said the police arrested the accused at a checkpoint near Jamalpur following a tipper.
The accused was riding a motorcycle when the police stopped and frisked him. The police recovered 30-gm heroin from his pocket. The police also confiscated his motorcycle.
Singh said around 20 students took coaching centre to prepare for IELTS at his centre.
The accused confessed indulging in smuggling of contraband for the past one year. He used to procure heroin from a Kapurthala man and used to sell it among addicts.
A case under section 22-61-85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the accused at Jamalpur police station.
In another case, the CIA-2 arrested a person identified as Pardeep Kumar from near the Jalandhar Bypass area and recovered 10-gram heroin from his possession.
A case was registered against the accused at the Salem Tabri police station.
