Twitter users trolled comedian Tanmay Bhat on Monday for posting a video that “insulted” veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar and Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Bhat, on a Youtube video, transposed his face with that of the two personalities and played out a fictional conversation between them.
Imitating Lata Mangeshkar in the video, Bhat says that cricketer Virat Kohli is better than Tendulkar. To this, the comedian -- now playing Tendular -- tells the singer, “You are 5,000 years old... “
While the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has warned of action against Bhat, Twitter users too lashed out at him for mocking the two idols, with some calling the video “offensive” and saying that it “wasn’t even funny”.
In attempting to bring out the ugliness of Sachin and Lata, Tanmay Bhatt brilliantly succeeded in bringing out his own ugliness— The Bad Doctor (@DOCTORATLARGE) May 29, 2016
Show me humor in Tanmay Bhatt's video on Sachin and Lata Di, I'll show you a mechanical engineer with girlfriend.— EngiNerd. (@mainbhiengineer) May 29, 2016
What happened to Bollywood who supported Tanmay Bhatt FOE on AIB Roast event? Insult is an insult whether it's about common man or celebrity— Anshul Saxena (@AskAnshul) May 29, 2016
Some, however, defended Bhat’s brand of funny.
@thetanmay :-) come now, surely its all warm fuzzy and familiar after being a denizen of Twitter- kya?— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) May 29, 2016
@thetanmay One tiny slip and the whole world jumps on your throat. That's the life of a stand up.— Pritish Nandy (@PritishNandy) May 30, 2016
Bhat chimed in to the tweets on Monday.
LOL, Twitter, jaha pe logo ke marne se pehle unke marne ki khabar trend hoti hai "tastleless" aur "crass" jaise words use kar rahi hai— Tanmay Bhat (@thetanmay) May 30, 2016
This is not the first time the AIB comedian has faced the ire of social media users.
Bhat had sparked another debate this month after posting a Youtube video on May 20 over the necessity of feminism. He was part of the AIB Knockout Roast -- held in January 2015 -- that involved Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor and snowballed into a full-fledged controversy for perpetrating “obscenity”.
