On the 124th birth anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (J&KPCC) here on Thursday condemned what it described as "communal and divisive forces" that had been distorting history regarding the first Prime Minister of the country to gain "cheap publicity".
The Congress' statement came on Thursday, after the party paid tributes to Nehru during a function at its office at Shaheedi Chowk here on Thursday.
The function was presided over by former member of Parliament Dharam Pal Sharma, while former deputy chief minister Mangat Ram Sharma was the chief guest.
In a press release issued here on Thursday, the Congress described Nehru as a visionary and the architect of modern India. "For him, political democracy was a means of solving social problems," said the press release.
The press release said that Nehru had also laid the foundation of India's atomic energy and handpicked Homi Bhabha, after whom Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, has been named.
