Cong, BJP won due to BSP support

india Updated: Nov 11, 2006 01:25 IST

BAHUJAN SAMAJ Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Friday said the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were able to bag 11 mayoral seats due to tactical support by the BSP.

“To ensure the defeat of the Samajwadi Party candidates, we had decided to shift our votes to the BJP and the Congress. After my direction the party supporters cast their votes in favour of the two parties, whichever was in position to defeat the SP candidates,” she said.

“The BSP had fielded its candidate on the Lucknow mayoral seat. But the party leaders informed me that our candidate was won over by the Samajwadi Party. I directed the party supporters to transfer their vote in favour of the Congress candidate. Congress was able to give a tough fight to the BJP due to the BSP vote. Every one is aware of the fact that the Congress has lost its base in the state and is in the ICU,” she said. Talking to the media persons, Mayawati said, “if the urban local bodies election had been free and fair, the Samajwadi Party would not have been able to open its account.”

“The SP had been virtually wiped out in the urban areas. On the other hand the BSP performed well in the civic poll though its candidate had contested the poll on free symbols. Majority of the candidates fielded by the BSP in Nagar Palika Parishads and Nagar Panchayats won the seats,” she said.

“If the urban local bodies election is any indication, the Samajwadi Party would meet its nemesis in the Vidhan Sabha poll and the BSP would come to power with absolute majority,” she said.

“We could not focus on the Nagar Nigams since its area was bigger. For a fortnight the BSP cadre was in mourning after the death Kanshi Ram. We had no time to campaign and inform the voters about the symbol of the candidates,” she said. In Agra, the candidate supported by the BSP for the mayoral post was allotted the car symbol, whereas those contesting for the corporators’ post were allotted the chair symbol. This caused utter confusion among the BSP supporters and the BJP managed to win the seat, she said.

Reacting to the report released by SC Commission in New Delhi recently, Mayawati said the report clearly indicated that there had been increase in atrocities on the members of the dalit community under the Samajwadi Party regime. “A dalit community member was brutally killed in Bijnore on Thursday by the ruling party goons,” she said.

She called upon the Central Government to dismiss the state government and impose President’s rule. After the completion of the local bodies poll, the party would focus on the Vidhan Sabha election, she said.
