Charging the Congress and the ruling BSP in Uttar Pradesh with putting up an "exhibition fight" to secure the Dalit vote bank, the BJP on Saturday said it will launch a statewide movement next week against "blatant abuse of SC/ST Act as a weapon for political vendetta".
"The ongoing tussle between the Congress and the BSP over the alleged statement of the former's UP chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi about Mayawati is nothing but a noora kushti (exhibition fight) aimed at securing the Dalit vote bank", BJP national Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said in Allahabad.
Addressing party workers here, Naqvi alleged that the Congress and the BSP, in power at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh respectively, appeared to have "no constructive agenda for the betterment of the people who have voted in their favour".
Taking potshots at the Mayawati-led government in the state for slapping SC/ST Act against the UPCC President, the BJP leader said, "It appears that uttering the name of the BSP supremo is sufficient ground for being booked under the Act".
Expressing concern over "blatant abuse of SC/ST Act for political gains" the former Union Minister said it has resulted in at least 20,000 false cases having been registered".
"The BJP is determined to call this bluff and we will be launching a statewide movement on July 21 wherein our workers will mobilise the people against the misuse of the Act which has been reduced to a weapon for political vendetta", Naqvi added.
