Congress candidate from Saharanpur, Imran Masood’s statement that “Hum Modi ki kutti kaat denge (We will cut Modi to pieces)” has triggered a fierce controversy in political circles here on Thursday.

In the Western Uttar Pradesh dialect, however, this expression is used to mean teaching a lesson to an enemy.

While speaking to HT over the phone, Masood clarified that it might be an old statement, but he couldn’t recall the time and place where he had said such things.

He said he had seen the clipping, shot sometime in the last summer because his shirt was seen soaked in sweat.

But he clarified that even if he had said such a thing, he would have meant that he would teach Modi a lesson through the democratic process.

He, however, said such language should not be used in a democracy, but refused to apologise for his words. “I am ready to offer my apology only after Modi apologises for his misdeeds in Gujarat,” he said.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi took strong exception to the use of provocative language while criticising adversaries.

“We have ideological differences with our political adversaries. We can attack them using decent language. The Congress does not appreciate the use of provocative language,” she said.
