The Congress on Tuesday called the PM’s former media advisor Sanjaya Baru’s book as “mother of all plants”, saying his account is “baseless and riddled with contradictions” as he had no privileged access or inside knowledge.

In a lengthy statement, the party asserted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi shared the “best of relations”.

“The political relationship between the PM and the Congress president is an inspiring example of the great democratic tradition of selfless cooperation of political leaders in the best interests of our nation, established and fostered in the Congress party by Mahatma Gandhi,” it said.

Coming in the midst of general elections, Congress leaders are smelling conspiracy over the timing of the back-to-back release of two books Baru’s ‘ Accidental Prime Minister - The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’ and former coal secretary PC Parakh ’s ‘Crusader or Conspirator? Coalgate and Other Truths’.

Party’s media department chairman Ajay Maken termed the timing of the release of the two books as unfortunate and alleged that the authors have “played into the hands” of the political opponents of the Congress by releasing them in the poll season.

The books have given the Bharatiya Janata Party fresh ammunition to attack the Congress and its leadership.

In Lucknow, Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad termed the books as a “conspiracy” against his party.
