Congress MLA from Kedarnath Shailarani Rawat expressed anger at the way relief work was being carried out even as party leader Ambika Soni, who is in charge of affairs in Uttarakhand, stood up for the state government.

Rawat demanded an increased compensation of R10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured and also wanted the number of houses for below-poverty-line families under the Indira Awas Yojana to be increased to 4,000.

Rawat even threatened to go on a dharna in Delhi if her demands were not met.

Soni even hit out at BJP leader Sushma Swaraj for demanding the dismissal of the Vijay Bahuguna government for its “inept handling” of the situation in flood-devastated Uttarakhand, saying her remark was “irresponsible”.

“Political leaders have all come forward to help the people. The state government is working overtime to assuage their trauma,” she said.
