The gunman of a Congress legislator from Amgaon in Gondia district of eastern Maharashtra let loose in Dongargarh in neighbouring Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh.
The accused Gyaneshwar Uikey, opened indiscriminate fire and gunned down his father-in-law Heeralal Sahu. Uikey later tried to kill himself using his service revolver on late Friday evening.
The MLA, Ratan Raut, who is presently abroad, was provided with a gunman as he represents the Naxalite-affected Amgaon assembly constituency.
Ukiey, who belongs to Gadchiroli district, was married to Sahu's daughter. Uikey went to meet his wife at his in-laws house at Dongargarh in Chhattisgarh. Sources said that Uikey, an alcoholic, and his in-laws were not on good terms.
Sahu did not allow Uikey to meet his wife. A deeply irked Uikey then went berserk and opened bullets on Sahu from his service revolver. Sahu was killed on the spot. Uikey then turned the gun at himself and pumped in six bullets.
The local police took a heavily-bleeding Uikey to Rajnandgaon hospital from where he was referred to Raipur. He was reported to be in a critical condition.
Chandrashekhar Meena, the superintendent of police (SP) of Gondia district, informed that Uikey was Raut’s gunman for the last one and a half years. He had 30 bullets in the magazines and an extra set of 30 bullets with him.
