Theni C Jayakumar, the official Congress candidate for Villianur constituency, is finding it tough with strong opposition from a section of Congressmen in the constituency.

A meeting held at Villianur last night under the leadership of former Minister Ananda Bhaskaran and NIT Narayanasamy strongly criticised the candidature of Jayakumar and resolved to field a rebel Congress candidate.

They objected to PCC President P Shanmugham claiming that 'real Congress workers' supported Jayakumar.

Jayakumar, a sitting TMC(M) member from Villianur, expressed his wish to join the Congress a few days before notification of polls so that he could contest the seat again on a Congress ticket.

This was opposed by Congressmen from the area, who registered their protest with Shanmugham. However, the latter admitted Jayakumar into the Congress and nominated him as the candidate for Villianur.
