THE UTTAR Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) Other Backward Classes (OBC) Cell would soon launch an agitation against the neglect of OBCs at the hands of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) OBC Cell chairman KC Lenka said the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government had come to power with the support of weaker sections and the minorities. “Therefore its primary responsibility is to implement Centre’s poverty alleviation and other welfare programmes,” he said.

Lenka said the UPCC president had been asked to prepare a road map to strengthen the party’s OBC Cell in the State. Lenka also addressed a meeting of the district and city presidents of the OBC Cell. UPCC OBC Cell chairman Chaudhary Akhilesh Singh presided over the meeting.

In a resolution the meeting praised the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for providing reservation to the backward class in institutes of higher learning.

The meeting also demanded more teeth to the State Backward Classes Commission, free travel facilities to OBC candidates and increasing the creamy layer limit for OBCs from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. It also decided to invite the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to the proposed OBC Maha Panchayat to be held in Lucknow in September.
