Despite tough fight from the NCP, the Congress party emerged single largest party in the Solapur Municipal Corporation election with the party winning 40 seats in the 98 seats house.
Even as the congress is short of only 10 seats to control the corporation, party leaders are confident of ruling the civic body once again on the basis of taking support from the independent candidates, who have won 10 seats, and other like minded parties like CPI and CPM.
Nationalist Congress party led by Vijay Sinh Mohite Patil fought the election bittely with congress. However it could bag 14 seats, while the no-alliance between the BJP and Shiv Sena coasted the saffron alliance dearly. BJP bagged 15 seats while Shiv Sena won only nine seats.
During the last term also, Solkpaur Municipal Corporation was ruled by Congress while NCP and other like minded parties like CPI and CPM had share in the power. For the first time after 18-years of alliance, the BJP and Shiv Sena candidates contested the elections separately following the seat sharing formula between both the parties failed.
Despite the fact that elections was of civic body, Congress leader Sushilkumar Shinde and NCP leader Vijaysinh Mohite Patil had made it a prestige issue with both the leaders tried to grab the power at civic body. The polls were mainly fought on the basis issues like drinking water problem and infrastructure.
In the election arena there might have been bitter fight between Congress and NCP, leaders of Congress party however later maintained that their party will welcome all those who have secular mindset. City Congress President Dharma Bhosale told HT that "Congress will take other like minded and secular parties along with it while ruling the Solapur Corporation.
