STEPPING UP its preparations for the Vidhan Sabha elections the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) has given final touches to a panel of candidates for 200 Vidhan Sabha seats. It would submit the panel to the party high command by July 30.

Salman Khurshid was talking to mediapersons soon after inducting social activist Annu Tandon into the Congress at UPCC headquarters, here today. Khurshid appointed Tandon the chairperson of UPCC’s Relief and Rehabilitation Committee and asked her to undertake programmes to help poor in all the districts of the State.

Khurshid said the Congress would give preference to new faces in the selection of candidates. The Congress had already given indications by inducting new faces, while revamping the district units of the party, said Khurshid.

Replying to a question, Khurshid said besides ensuring extensive revision of elections rolls, the Election Commission should also ensure that no names were deleted at the last minute from the list of voters. At times, names of people belonging to any particular area were being deleted, he said. There should be no problem in issuing voter’s identity cards to all voters and introduce photo electoral rolls, he said.

Khurshid said he along with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Ashok Gehlot would begin touring the nearby districts to mobilise crowd for Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s rally at Kanpur on August 8.
