A Congress leader, who was booked for allegedly assaulting a lawyer here, has been arrested on charges of attempt to murder, official sources said on Sunday.
District president of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Zahid Jan was arrested from the house of a senior party leader near Srinagar Airport during a midnight raid, the sources said.
Police had registered a case under sections 392 and 307 RPC (attempt to murder) against Jan for allegedly assaulting Advocate Nazir Ahmad Malik at TRC crossing on Friday night.
However, SHO Kothibagh police station Shafiq Ahmad said that Jan was arrested after he walked into the police station last night.
Malik was counsel for Jan in a case relating to a dispute over tenancy of a shop in Delhi's Azad Mandi.
According to the lawyer, "Jan came to High Court Friday and used abusive language against me for not attending his calls. Since I was pleading a case before a bench, it was not possible for me to do so."
Malik said that late in the evening, the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of the Congress leader had called him to return the case file.
"I reached TRC crossing to hand over the file to him but was thrashed by him and his PSOs," Malik had alleged.
Jan yesterday approached a city court to seek anticipatory bail but the accused did not get any relief and called for the case diaries and listed it for hearing on June 14.
