Congress MP from Hoshangabad Rao Uday Pratap Singh joined the BJP on Thursday, levelling serious charges against Congress senior leaders that they took money for giving tickets for the assembly elections.

Rao reached state BJP office in the morning in an SUV along with chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state BJP president Narendra Singh Tomar where Chouhan made the announcement before media persons about the Congress MP joining the BJP.

Along with Rao Uday Pratap Singh several other Congress leaders and workers including district Congress president Narsinghpur Mahendra Patel joined the BJP.

“There has been corruption in the party in the past four years or so in ticket distribution. Par had to tab ho gayi jab bade bade rajnetaon ne seedhe tatha paroksh roop se lekar logon ko upkrit kiya (The situation reached such a point that even big politicians took money to do favour to people with tickets)”, said the MP to the media persons.

Rao Uday Pratap Singh who was once known to be close to senior Congress leader Suresh Pachouri said Manak Agarwal (Congress leader) took name of Suresh Pachouri in a direct manner for taking money. Such charges were levelled against him when he was the state Congress president.

But the Congress high command never took notice of the same and never cared to know about the pain and anguish of the MPs and MLAs.

A resident of Narsinghpur district Rao Uday Pratap Singh was elected to the state assembly from Tendukheda seat in 2008 assembly elections.

At the time of Lok Sabha he got ticket for Hoshangabad seat. Pachouri played a key role in his getting the party ticket.

He defeated BJP nominee and close lieutenant of Rampal Singh, close lieutenant of Chouhan by a margin of 19245 votes.

As per Congress leaders, the MP had of late defected to Kamal Nath camp within the party. He was peeved at the party affairs as he couldn’t have his say in ticket distribution in his parliamentary constituency for the assembly elections and even his opponents within the party got tickets.

However, his joining the BJP comes at a time when BJP is trying to turn the table on the Congress in Hoshangabad region. Out of eight assembly segments under Hoshangabad Lok Sabha seat four are with Congress. Similarly, in Narsinghpur district all the four assembly seats are with the Congress.

The BJP gave blow to the Congress when of late the latter was trying to step up offensive against Chouhan.

On Thursday, state Congress released a piece of advertisement on Wednesday levelling corruption charges against Chouhan’s wife, brother-in-law and brother though without naming name. Silhouette of CM and his wife in the advertisement was enough to send the message to people.

Congress leaders at the state Congress went into a huddle to discuss the situation the moment they came to know about the development.

“He became first MLA and then MP within just six months time. This is how party rewarded him. He must tell if he gave money to party leaders to get tickets. He has betrayed his organisation.”
