A Congress gram panchayat member in Murshidabad district who was instrumental in the Congress wresting the panchayat seat from the Left, was found dead in a field with his eyes gouged out, the police said.
The police said the body of 31-year-old Abul Hussain of Mohorul gram panchayat, was found in a field, near his house at Mohorul village, 50 km from Berhampore.
His eyes were gouged out and there were strangulation marks on his neck, the police said.
The police suspect that Hussain was killed last night.
Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury alleged that Hussain was killed by his political rivals. "He was instrumental in wresting the panchayat seat from the left last year."
