IN AN impressive show of strength, the district Congress organised a dharna at the Gandhi Hall in Indore against the failure of the BJP Government to provide urea and power to the farmers. The agitation was led by Congress leader Ajay Singh and Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kantilal Bhuria.
Hundreds of Congressmen, many from rural areas, congregated at the Gandhi Hall grounds from 11 am and listened patiently till 4 pm as leader after leader highlighted the failure of the government in fulfilling its poll promises and gave a clarion call to the Congressmen to prepare for the next elections to throw out the BJP regime.
Ajay Singh reminded Congress faithfuls that BJP had come to power on the promise that they would remove ‘Bhay (fear), Bhook (hunger) and Bhrashtachar (corruption)’ if they were given a chance. ‘‘The people of the State gave them their chance. However, instead of removing ‘Bhay’ the BJP has created terror in the minds of the people by murdering Prof Sabharwal in Ujjain.
The members of saffron brigade believed in holding gherao at police stations at the drop of the hat while some of their leaders believed in slapping police inspectors (incident outside Bhopal airport during Advani’s visit).’’
Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kantilal Bhuria said that shortfall in supply of urea was mainly due to corruption and failure of the State Government to ensure proper distribution. He pointed out that the Centre had released whatever urea the State had asked for and it was wrong to blame it for the urea crisis.
So far as removing hunger went, the BJP had failed to provide power and urea to the farmers at a time when, thanks to bountiful rainfall last year, there was enough water. Ajay said that less said about corruption the better.
“BJP leaders who used to ride motorcycles are now going around in Scorpio cars, and all this money is coming from siphoning off crores of rupees from funds given by Centre on various heads.”
