The 50th death anniversary of first Prime Minister of independent India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was observed here on Tuesday in a function organised at the Congress party head quarters Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu.

The function was presided over by DCC president and former MLA Om Chopra and attended by senior leaders of PCC, DCC urban, mahila wing and INTUC.

Tribute was paid to Pt Nehru on this occasion and his contributions during the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and later as the first Prime Minister of free India was remembered.

The speakers recalled the visionary and dynamic leadership of Pt Nehru, under whose stewardship the country laid strong foundations in all spheres of life and progressed on all fronts.

Pt Nehru is known as an architect of modern India because of his leadership as the Prime Minister.

He was a statesman of international repute and was instrumental in the formation of non-aligned movement in the world leading to the creation of a new world order, when the world was divided into two blocks.

Pt Nehru firmly believed and followed the ideals of secularism and socialism in view of the pluralistic character of this nation.
