In a huge setback to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi ahead of the state assembly polls to be held later this year, Congress has wrested Mansa assembly seat in a by poll. The seat was held by the BJP since 1995 and was considered as BJP stronghold.

Mansa is part of state capital Gandhinagar district. Modi had avoided campaigning in Mansa apparently in an attempt to downplay the significance of the by poll.

The by poll was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Mangaldas Patel, who was previously assembly speaker.

Congress candidate Babuji Thakor won the by poll with margin of over 8000 votes, defeating BJP candidate Dashrath Patel. Thakor belongs to numerically significant Thakor (OBC) community while BJP had picked up it's candidate from powerful Patel community.

"Our candidate has won the by poll. The result indicates which way the wind is blowing in Gujarat. The same fate awaits BJP in the assembly polls to be held in November December," Gujarat leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohol said while reacting to Congress candidate's victory.

He said the his party has won despite blatant misuse of government machinery, money and muscle power by the ruling party.
