Congress workers block national highway at Banihal

india Updated: May 08, 2015 21:52 IST

The Congress workers, led by former minister and Banihal MLA Vikar Rasool Vani, staged a protest at Banihal after the Friday prayers and blocked Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the heart of town in protest against the alleged non-serious approach of the PDP-BJP government towards the problems faced by the local residents.

They also took out a protest march which started from the Tourist Sarai at Banihal and culminated at the SDM's office where thousands of Congress workers supported by the various social organisations, members of Banihal Beopar mandal and unemployed youth associations submitted a charter of public demands to the sub-divisional magistrate. Their demands include availability of adequate teaching and medical staff in local schools and hospitals.

Protesters slammed the coalition government in the state for their alleged non-seriousness towards upgradation of schools to the high secondary level in the area and setting up administrative units in Banihal sanctioned by the previous government and the deteriorating conditions of national highway.

MLA Rasool Vani alleged that the indifferent attitude of PDP-BJP government towards the Banihal constituency from the Day-1 was a cause of concern.

He said that Banihal was the gateway of Kashmir, but the non-serious attitude of the present government towards this area was damaging its sheen while the condition of the national highway was a glaring example of the government's apathy.
