He came to Gurgaon six years ago to work as a driver but went on to become a master conman, pretending to be a judge, befriending the rich and powerful and duping them of crores, before the police finally caught on to him. The story of Ashish Sen could rival any Bollywood potboiler.
The 33-year-old resident of Hisar went by the name Ashish Bishnoi and claimed to be a city judicial magistrate. There was no reason not to believe him — he had four personal security officers, a red beacon for his expensive cars and lived in a penthouse.
“He has cheated hundreds of people but we have received only six complaints. He invited officials and politicians to his house for parties... He is an imposter and a fraud,” said joint commissioner (crime) Vivek Sharma.
Sen was arrested in Hisar on Thursday after his girlfriend complained to the police, accusing him of taping her and using it to blackmail her. The police did not disclose who the other complainants were.
Police sources said Sen convinced many top government and police officials to invest in HUDA land projects and duped them of amounts ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 2 crore. “The complaints say he conned people of Rs 4 crore but we are sure there is more,” said Sharma, adding that the only time he ever got into trouble with the police was when he was arrested in 2004 for giving a fake ID for a mobile connection.
The sources said Sen also had a number of girlfriends and he got money out of them too. “He lived in the rented penthouse with a live-in partner,” said Sharma, adding that he had a wife and two sons in Hisar and a second wife and daughter in Gurgaon.
“He travelled across India with his girlfriends and stayed in five-star hotels. He recorded intimate moments with them and blackmailed them,” Sharma said.
In the course of the investigation, police were shocked to find that an assistant sub-inspector had provided Sen with call details of his girlfriends, the sources said.
Sen also managed to meet police commissioner Alok Mittal. “I met him at a Mata ki chowki in Gurgaon when I was joint commissioner. He came to me and introduced himself as Ashish Bishnoi, saying he’d been selected for the judiciary recently,” Mittal said, denying any connection with him.
