Consciousness is just a step away

An oft-repeated question I am used to answer is: What’s spirituality? My simple answer: Spirituality is a tool to rediscover one's inner self. It is not trying for perfection because perfection is already there within each one of us. Only that it has been clouded beyond our realisation in the normal way. The consciousness of a just-born child is unblemished, and that is the self in its pure consciousness.

One can have a better understanding of consciousness if one learns what Lord Buddha had said about it. He divided the entire process of existence into different stages. The first and the foremost being consciousness, the second level comes when consciousness creates perception. Thirdly, the moment perception starts, imperfection creeps in. Since human beings can perceive, their senses make them react and act. That is why it is said that human beings are imperfect because their consciousness is buried deep.

At the first level (consciousness), one is in supreme bliss, but perception leads one to the state of existence. That’s why it is said that there can’t be any existence without perception.

At the level of existence, one comes to the cycle of action and reaction, and that in turn leads one to the cycle of karma.

Therefore, the stress is on eliminating the imperfections to get back to the perfect nature of one’s being. And that is possible by walking the path of spiritualism and meditation. The rediscovery of one’s true self needs a virtuous life that seeks oneness not only with one's self but with all living beings around us.

Ours is an unreal world wherein we are in a mad rush to push ourselves further from the reality and the truth. The truth is that we are befooling ourselves by not trying to break the cycle of karma. Let’s realise that realising this truth is the first step towards self-realisation. In other words, consciousness is just a step away.
