A 47-year-old constable has been arrested after his lover of five years accused him of raping her.

On July 15, a 27-year-old woman filed an application alleging that constable Deepak Chavan had been raping her for five years after promising to marry her.

And when she asked him to divorce his wife and get married to her, Chavan refused and threatened to kill her if she told his wife about their affair, the application added.

Based on the application, the police registered a complaint against Chavan on Friday.

The constable was arrested on Saturday on charges of rape and criminal intimidation.

Chavan, who is attached with the Local Arms Division III, has been posted as a telephone operator at Mantralaya since 2003.

The victim, who has three elder sisters, lives with her parents at Borivli, while Chavan lives alone at the police quarters behind the Colaba police station.

His wife lives in Ahmedabad with their two-year-old daughter and visits him only during vacations.

Inspector Prakash Bhoite, of the Colaba police station, said in 2003, the victim, who was employed as a temporary clerk at SNDT College in Santacruz, visited Mantralaya to obtain permission to repair her MHADA home.

There she met Chavan, who assured to help her get the permission. After a few meetings, they started seeing each other, Bhoite said.

“Chavan and the victim had a physical relation for the last five years. The victim knew that Chavan was married and had a two-year-old daughter,” said Bhoite.

Chavan used to take the victim to his residence as he lived alone, the police said.

In 2008, when the victim asked Chavan to divorce his wife and get married to her, he refused.

After this incident, they would frequently quarrel.

“In her application, the woman pleaded us to convince him to marry her. When the victim realised that Chavan would not divorce his wife and marry her, she approached the police,” said Bhoite.

Chavan has been remanded to police custody for four days.

The police said the victim is the youngest of four sisters. While two of her sisters are married, her third sister works at a private firm.
