An injury to a photojournalist during the Lal Chowk encounter in Srinagar on Thursday sparked off a controversy.
Amaan Farooq, a lensman who works with the daily Greater Kashmir, was shot in the leg by a police officer after an altercation, said journalists who were covering the encounter from atop a building opposite Punjab Hotel.
After a heated argument with the police officer, the photographers began to descend from the building.
“The officer was following us. When Amaan Farooq clicked a photograph of the DSP, he shot at him with his pistol,” said PTI photographer Umar Ganai. The police have denied the allegation but ordered an inquiry. “I don’t think any of our officers can do this, but to have an open mind, I have initiated an inquiry,” said Kashmir IGP Farooq Ahmad.
