A girl was allegedly molested by a policeman in Jammu on Thursday, which led to the simultaneous protest demonstration by people.

The incident happened in a moving mini-bus when the girl, who is a college student, was on her way back to home at Vijaypur in Samba district from Jammu city. The policeman, Rajinder Singh, working as constable in Kot Bhalwal central jail, was immediately arrested by police and taken to the Bari Brahmna police station.

According to girl, the Singh boarded the bus from the Gangyal area of Jammu and sat next to the girl. He allegedly started to pull the girl's cloths. "Despite objection, he didn't stop and started touching my body and holding my hand. After alighting from the mini-bus at Bari Brahmna, the policeman started to follow me to which I confronted him," the girl added.

Daughter of a policeman, the girl who is in her 20s, is a boxer and plays for J&K police occasionally.

Taking advantage of being a boxer, girl punched Rajinder Singh several times before he was whisked away by flying squad of police present nearby.

Seeing the girl involved in a scuffle with the suspect, people standing nearby got hold of him and started to beat him up and also protested against the molestation. The police party nearby reached the spot and defused the situation by arresting the policeman.

"The incident happened in mini-bus when it was on way from Jammu to Bari Brahmna. When the scuffle started in Bari Brahmna bus stop, police swung into action an arrested the policeman who allegedly molested the girl," said SP Samba Koushal Kumar.

A case under section 294 of the RPC has been registered against Rajinder Singh. "We have started the investigation and it won't be appropriate to comment on the issue before the probe gets over," Kumar added.

Sources in police department told Hindustan Times that the policeman was drunk and has been taken to local hospital for medical examination.
