Angry BJP workers and villagers killed a policeman, injured nine persons and set a police station ablaze here on Sunday morning.
The mob attacked head constable Puran Ram with sticks and stones, killing him on the spot, Kumaon divisional commissioner S. Raju said.
He said this was in reaction to the murder of a local BJP leader, allegedly by a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) district president, some 270 km southeast of Dehradun on Saturday night.
Raju said local BJP leader Balwant Singh Kanyal and BSP district president Neeraj Tiwari were enemies and had a scuffle at a restaurant on Saturday.
After the fight, Tiwari rushed to the police station to lodge a complaint. Kanyal did the same but was shot dead by Tiwari just outside the police station, Raju said. Tiwari was arrested.
Raju said the police were no match for the mob that torched the station. “Even the injured couldn’t be taken to hospital as the station was surrounded by 200 BJP workers and several hundred villagers," he said.
