An inspector was placed under suspension on Friday over the death of two persons, including a teenage girl, in an alleged police firing during a raid on bootleggers' units at Harij town of Patan district.

P V Chaudhary, the inspector who led the raid and ordered firing on Wednesday when his team was attacked with sharp weapons, was suspended with immediate effect, Patan Superintendent of Police A S Ghelot told PTI.

"Chaudhary has been suspended so that there could be an unbiased inquiry into the incident where two people died in police firing," he said.

He said police are investigating the circumstance in which firing occurred.

The district collector has also ordered a magisterial enquiry into the matter, police said.

Clashes broke out in the Hatdapara area in the outskirts of Harij town on Wednesday after police raided dens of local bootleggers Arvind Thakore and Manuji Thakore.

To disperse the mob, police fired six rounds which killed one Manuji and his daughter Jigiben (16), who were among the attackers. Both were shot in the stomach.
