In an attempt to contain "rogue" elements within the police, a constable, has been taken into custody for firing at civilians, who were playing carom, in Srinagar's Maisuma area.

Though no senior police officer is confirming that the constable has been arrested, sources told Hindustan Times that Feroz Ahmad, a constable, who shot at civilians on Monday forenoon, has been taken into custody.

Sources said the constable fired at the civilians, including two nephews of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik and three other civilians, after a verbal altercation with one of them.

Sources said the constable, without taking orders from the seniors, fired at civilians. One of them, Yasir Ahmad Sheilk, the nephew of Malik, is critical with multiple injuries. He is battling for life in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar.

The incident has led to massive protests in Maisuma area with people defying curfew on Tuesday.
