Two days after the alleged gangrape of a second-year law student in a desolate area of the Bangalore University campus on Saturday night, the police remained clueless about the identity of the rapists. Joint commissioner of police (crime) Pranab Mohanty said, “For the time being, the police are not in a position to come to a conclusion on the episode.” Deputy commissioner SN Siddaramappa of Bangalore West said the police were still waiting for the medical report. “We can say anything only after receiving the medical report,” he said.

The 21-year-old student of National Law School of India University was allegedly raped by an eight-member gang deep inside a wooded area of the Bangalore University campus, the police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Saturday night after the gang stopped the car in which the woman was going with her boyfriend, who is an IT employee from Kerala, the two said in a joint complaint to the police.

The woman said the inebriated gang members told them to get out of the car and forcibly took them deeper into the woods, robbed them of their valuables, including their iPods and mobile phones and demanded money from her boyfriend.

The victim said she was sexually assaulted when her boyfriend was taken by a gang member to his car quite some distance away to bring his wallet. The boyfriend saw a beat constable near the car and asked him for help after which the gang member fled the spot. Though he and the policeman searched for the woman, they could not find her.

The boyfriend received a call from the victim around 1am when she said that the gang had dropped her near her hostel after raping her.
