CHARGES WERE framed against the three accused in the Ashiana rape case in the court of additional district judge on Tuesday. The accused—Bhartendu Mishra, Aman Bakshi and Faizan— facing charges under Section 365/376 (abduction and rape) IPC. Evidence would be presented in court on May 11. All three accused had appeared in court on Tuesday. Earlier, non-bailable warrants were issued for two accusedd—Mishra and Bakshi— after the court had rejected their plea that they were unwell to attend hearing.

Significantly, the police chargesheet lacks vital evidence which would certainly help the accused during trial. Legal experts allege the police may have favoured the accused by not seizing the Santro car which was used to abduct the minor girl. The accused had tortured and raped the girl in the car before taking her to a plot in Aliganj on May 2, 2005.

Former SSP Navniet Sekera, who had scuttled all pressure from ‘higher-ups’ while identifying the accused and initiating action against them, had made efforts to seize the car. But before he could do much, he was transferred. Gaurav is nephew of don-turned Samajwadi Party’s former MLC Arun Shanker Shukla alias ‘Anna’. The car in which the crime was committed is owned by Gaurav’s brother.

Right after Sekera’s transfer, ‘Anna’ pulled strings to obtain favours from the police thereafter, the accused and his family moved about without any qualms in the city. The cops did not visit Shukla’s house even once. Had the cops seized the car and evidence indicating torture of the girl collected, stricter would certainly have been framed against the accused.

Lawyers abuse activists

DEFENCE LAWYERS Arvind Mishra and Ramendra Verma were at their shocking best, abusing and threatening women activists with dire consequences, after the hearing in the Ashiana rape case, before the Additional District Judge, on Tuesday. One of the activists happened to be former Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University, Prof Roop Rekha Verma. Ramendra Verma had even claimed, a few minutes before the brawl, that he had been her student!

The two lawyers hurled abuses and resorted to personal comments with clear intention to humiliate in public, the women activists Prof Roop Rekha Verma and Madhu Garg. Finally, Chowk Circle Officer Rakesh Sahani escorted the women and the Ashiana rape case victim’s parents to their vehicle.

Prof Verma said, “The defence lawyers want us to withdraw from the case but we want justice and we will attend every single hearing”.

The activists later met District Judge SC Sharma and were assured action against the errant lawyers.

Ironically, just before the incident, Ramendra Verma was seen ‘sanely’ chatting with Prof Verma.

Prof Verma said, “Ramendra came up to me and said I had taught him. However, I told him that I found his face familiar but I had never taught him.” The lawyers started abusing the activists right after this conversation.
