A youth drowned after allegedly being pushed into a canal in Faridabad by two policemen who were then beaten up by angry locals in Ballabhgarh town of Haryana.
Guddu Chaudhry (26) from Bihar was gambling with his friends atop a water tank near Gurgaon canal on Saturday night when head constable Surender Singh and constable Vinod, attached with Faridabad Sector IV police station, policemen on patrol duty turned up, Faridabad Senior Superintendent of Police Mahender Singh said on Sunday.
Guddu and his friends tried to escape but he slipped from the tank and fell into the canal. "The current of the water was fast and he drowned," Singh said.
An eyewitness Mangal, however, alleged Guddu was chased and caught by the policemen who hit him with batons and pushed him into the canal. He did not know how to swim and cried for help but it went unheeded and he drowned, he said.
He said the policemen tried to run away but were surrounded by people from a nearby slum cluster and thrashed.
Guddu's relatives have filed a police complaint alleging foul play.
The SP denied Guddu was beaten or pushed into the canal but said a case had been registered against the two policemen on the complaint of Guddu's brother.
Head constable Surender Singh and constable Vinod, were admitted in Safdarjang hospital in New Delhi. Surender had sustained severe head injuries and the condition of both was stated to be critical, the SP said.
Ballabhgarh SDM Harish Jain said a Rs one lakh ex-gratia had been announced to Guddu's next of kin and an inquiry was on.
