The arrest of a member of a car theft racket on Sunday has convinced the Assam Police that the cars used in the three major blasts here last Thursday would take them nowhere. They have, however, pinned hopes of a breakthrough on clues from the SIM card used to send the SMS attributing the blasts to the little known Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahideen.
“We arrested Muzammil Haq and Anwarul Haq from Bongalmara area following tip-offs,” said Ataul Kareem, SP of Lakhimpur district in northeastern Assam. Muzammil, a resident of Nagaon in central Assam, is allegedly involved in a car theft racket and had suspiciously taken shelter in the house of petty contractor Anwarul at Bongalmara.
Muzammil, interestingly, carried a Bangladesh visa, fuelling theories of the adjoining country’s role in the Assam blasts.
