Delhi Police on Saturday said 57-year-old senior bureaucrat K Vijay Kumar and his wife Sita, who were both found dead in south Delhi’s Kaka Nagar last evening, had been undergoing psychological therapy for around a year.

Senior police officers associated with investigations into the case said they had ample evidence to conclude that the incident was triggered due to severe mental depression that the couple had been undergoing because of their marriage that was falling apart.

“K Vijay Kumar and his wife, Sita, 51, were undergoing treatment for separate psychiatric issues for around a year from a private facility,” a officer said. “According to their daughter, there were daily tiffs between the couple with her mother usually being the aggressor.”

According to police, Sita — who was posted as an assistant branch manager with a private bank — was undergoing psychiatric treatment for anger management while her husband was being treated for depression.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem reports of the couple were received by the police on Saturday. The reports stated that while Kumar died due to his throat being slit, Sita died due to asphyxia caused by hanging by her throat.

“As far as forensic evidence is concerned, a knife recovered from the house, which was apparently used to kill Kumar, bore Sita’s fingerprints,” the officer said. “This clearly means that she had killed Kumar before hanging herself,” the officer added.

Sources said they were in the process of ascertaining whether Sita had fed her husband a sedative before proceeding to attack him with a big knife.

“The incident might have been triggered over a argument on what was being cooked for dinner, since the autopsy report puts the time of Kumar’s death between 2:00 and 4:40am,” the officer said.
