Villagers and the police killed a three-year-old leopard here on Monday after it strayed into a colony and injured eight people.

Animal rights activists, however, demanded action against the police officers involved in the killing.

“It is highly unfortunate that the Karnal superintendent of police greeted his team for killing the endangered beast,” said Naresh Kadyan, chairman of People for Animals, Haryana.

The police claimed their bullets only injured the leopard, which was killed by the villagers with sharp weapons.

The police did not have the right equipment used to catch the animal alive, such as tranquilising guns, ropes and cages.

“We depend on the Kurukshetra team for such exercises because they are equipped to capture wild animals. But when the animal started attacking people, we had no choice but to kill it,” said Navdeep Singh Hooda, Karnal district forest officer.
