A National Conference municipal councillor was shot dead by unidentified militants in Srinagar on Wednesday.
The police said that the militants waylaid Ghulam Nabbi Wani outside his residence at Khanyar and shot at him. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The slain councillor’s family members said that Wani left the house at 9.25 a.m. to pay obeisance at the local shrine. They said that assailants fired upon him from a by-lane outside the house. The bullets hit him in the head and he collapsed on the spot.
Wani’s personal security officer Nazir Ahmad said that there were two assailants. “I retaliated and injured one of the assailants. But both of them managed to escape,” he said.
This is the first political killing in Srinagar and second in the Valley this year. Militants earlier shot dead a Congress leader Jan Mohammad Kukroo in Baramullah in March this year. Political activists belonging to mainstream groups have always been the prime targets. However, over the past one-year they had been spared of attacks.
