A couple wanted in connection with the murder of a 65-year-old man at Indirapuram’s Swarn Jayanti Park, was arrested on Tuesday.
The police said it was a case of premeditated murder. The victim was pressurising the woman to repay the R50,000 she had borrowed from him.
Rahul Kumar, 23, and Himani Mehra, 20, who were arrested from Kaushambi’s EDM Mall, had been staying at nearby Bhovapur for a year. Kumar, who worked as a bouncer in a mall, had lost his job due to ill health.
Mehra, a science graduate and a diploma-holder in hotel-management, had met the victim, Shyam Nandan Prasad, at Season Tour & Travels at Laxmi Nagar around two months ago.
Mehra used to work for the company and Prasad, a retired insurance company official, used to go there to book his tickets.
Prasad stayed at the Gaur Green apartment in Indirapuram. According to the police, Mehra said they became friends and often went for shopping at malls and markets. Later, Prasad loaned her R50,000 as she suffered from stones and required a surgery, said Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police (SSP).
But then Mehra, too, lost her job and was unable to pay back the money to Prasad.
Investigations revealed Prasad and Mehra used to be in touch on phone. Over the last 11 days before the murder, they had spoken at least 56 times.
“On August 11, the day of the murder, Prasad and Mehra spoke to each other at least six times,” Lal said. Mehra asked him to come to the park to meet her. She asked Kumar to accompany her and went for the meeting armed with a knife.
Prasad came with his three-year-old grandson. During the meeting, an altercation broke out between Prasad and Kumar, who stabbed him with the knife.
“Injured, Prasad tried to run away, but then Mehra also stabbed him,” SSP said. “Prasad died on the spot. The couple fled, leaving their bike behind.”
