A young college going couple in love struck up a suicide pact and jumped off the Mahatma Gandhi Setu over the Ganga on Saturday.

But as fate would have it, the boy drowned, while the girl swam to safety.

The girl, still dazed, and unable to explain how she managed to survive, faces two cases: One for attempting a suicide; and two: The more serious charge of abetting a murder, even murder!

Alamganj Police of Patna City area, which rushed to the spot on receiving the information put the girl under detention during which, she was interrogated on the circumstances that led to the suicide pact and the unfortunate death.

Police identified the boy as Ajit Kumar, a native of Hilsa in Nalanda and a B. Tech student enrolled with Punjab University, Chandigarh. The girl was identified as a student of intermediate in Deosharan Singh College of the same place. They had taken a reserved auto to come down to Patna to jump into the river!

Eyewitnesses said, the couple seemed to throw their cell phones into the river before they themselves took the jump from pillar number 40 under Patna police jurisdiction.

People on the banks were startled by the girl’s cries for help and tried to swim to her help. However, the girl safely made it to a boatman approaching her and was pulled in.

Police said, Ajit was swept away by the strong under currents in the water and his body had not been recovered so far.

The incident created a sensation, as it occurred right in front of a host of mediamen and people, who had congregated to witness the inaugural run of a cruise ship to Varanasi from Patna at the jetty. Many saw them jumping off together.

Patna City DSP, Rajesh Kumar said, that prima facie it appeared, that the couple took the extreme step after their families rejected the idea of their marriage. The girl had consumed a lot of river water, but was out of danger.

The police, however, do not rule out the possibility of a conspiracy.

“The girl apparently knew how to swim, while by her own confession, Ajit could not. If it was a suicide pact, why did she swim away,?” he wondered.
