A local court Wednesday framed charges against alleged underworld gangster Fazl-ur-Rehman, accused in an extortion case of 2003 where he had threatened a businessman allegedly on behalf of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's parents.

Chief Judicial magistrate V G Trivedi framed the charges of extortion against Rehman and scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 7. The police also filed a 148-page supplementary chargesheet in the case.

Rehman was brought to Surat on a transit remand after his arrest in March 2009 in Delhi.

In 2003, Shivnarayan Agarwal, owner of city-based Prafful Sarees, had filed a complaint against Shilpa's father Surendra Shetty and mother Sunanda Shetty after he started receiving threat calls from alleged underworld gangster Fazl-ur-Rehman and his aides asking him to pay money he owed to Shilpa.

According to police, Agarwal had hired Shilpa to endorse their brand of saree in 2001-02 and had signed a contract with the actress. But after the contract was over in 2003, the advertisement featuring Shilpa was broadcast on television, to which her parents had objected and asked Agarwal to pay additional money as he had violated the contract.
