Court stays sentence on Zaheera's brother
The decision was taken by sessions judge Abhay Thipsay till the Bombay High Court disposed of appeal filed by Zaheera and her family members.
A sessions court on Friday stayed pronouncement of sentence on Nasibulla Shaikh, brother of Best bakery key witness Zaheera Shaikh, on charges of giving false evidence.
The decision was taken by sessions judge Abhay Thipsay till the Bombay High Court disposed of appeal filed by Zaheera and her family members on similar charges.
The court had sentenced Zaheera, her mother Sehrunissa and sister Sahira to three months rigorous imprisonment but had shown leniency towards Nasibulla by announcing that it might refer his case for probation where in the accused need not spend the requisite period of sentence in jail.
In a related development, the court also extended till July six the bail of Zaheera's mother as it had expired.
She was granted bail after her conviction, as she preferred an appeal in the High Court.
The revision applications of Zaheera and her family members challenging their conviction would come up for hearing before the high court, defence lawyer Umesh Deshpande said.
While delivering Best bakery judgement on February 24, the court had issued notices to Zaheera and her family members asking them to explain why they should not be tried for perjury (giving false evidence). After framing charges against them later, he tried them for perjury resulting in their conviction.
