Hundreds of CPI and CPI(M) activists were arrested across Tamil Nadu on Monday when they tried to take out rallies, protesting rise in price of essential commodities.

In Chennai, CPI state secretary D Pandian, CPI Joint Secretary C Mahendran and CPI(M) National Executive Committee member, A Soundararajan, were among the over 1000 activists arrested, police said. In Coimbatore, over 1,200 volunteers were arrested when they attempted to stage a demonstration.

Left party volunteers were arrested at different places in Madurai.

Speakers attributed the price hike to hoarding of pulses and on-line trading of various essential commodities and demanded a ban on both. In Virudhunagar district, 3,000 CPI and CPI-M volunteers were arrested while an equal number were apprehended in Erode district, police said.
