CPI-M appoints Bose as W Bengal Secy
Politburo member Biman Bose replaces Anil Biswas, who passed away on Mar 26 following a massive cerebral attack.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday declared politburo member Biman Bose as its new West Bengal Secretary.
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya announced the unanimous decision of the state committee, which met at the party headquarters in Kolkata to elect the new Secretary.
The state committee meeting was attended by senior leaders like politburo member Jyoti Basu and party General Secretary Prakash Karat among others.
The post of the state Secretary had fallen vacant after the demise of Anil Biswas on March 26 following a massive cerebral attack.
Bose had been the Left Front chairperson since 2001. He is the senior most politburo member after Jyoti Basu.
An active member of the party, Bose came in touch with the undivided communist party in 1954 and joined a year later in 1955.
Since Biswas' admission to hospital, the responsibility of the election work had been entrusted to Bhattacharya and Bose.
The five-phase assembly elections start from April 17.
