The CPI(M) on Wednesday expressed strong opposition to the confirmation of the death sentence on Saddam Hussein by an appellate tribunal.

In a politburo statement, the CPI(M) reiterates that no fair trial is possible for Saddam Hussein and his colleagues under a regime of US occupation of Iraq. The execution of the death sentence will be a form of judicial assassination. it added.

The Party said that the US and the British government should realise that they will be responsible for the serious consequences, which will result from this extra-legal step.

The United Nation, bypassed in the aggression and occupation of Iraq, must intervene immediately to stop the execution.  The Indian government should take all political and diplomatic steps in this direction.
