CPI-ML demands ban on land acquisition by firms

india Updated: Jul 11, 2006 22:48 IST

Condemning the "brutal repression of farmers" at Dadri, the CPI-ML New Democracy on Tuesday demanded a ban on acquisition of land by private companies.

"The Uttar Pradesh government's forceful acquisition of land at Rs 1.5 per acre while market prices are 12 times higher is a misuse of state power to rob farmers for the benefit of Reliance. This is not open market mechanism, but a case of the government cheating the farmers," the party's secretary Ashish Mittal said in Allahabad.

He said Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's recent attack on the Centre for wheat imports and his statement that the state could have fulfilled the requirement for wheat, is hypocritical as "his government is adding to the wheat shortage by acquiring farm land for private companies".

Mittal demanded an impartial inquiry into the Dadri incident along with the unconditional release of arrested persons.
