"If I tell people I do magic, they want me to immediately make something disappear,” says Karan Singh, who dislikes being called a magician.

“I am a psychological illusionist. The concept of magic in our country is understood in a very basic way..it’s not all about cutting girls open on stage. What I do involves traditional magic, coupled with psychology,” says the 20-year-old Delhi University student, who recently got the chance to show his skills to illusionist, Derren Brown.

“I performed for Brown, who is my idol, in London. It was a dream come true and I read his mind. The biggest compliment was when he said: I have no idea how you did that,” he says, adding, “The first rule of magic is to never reveal how you do your trick. But I can tell you that a lot is about body movements. I can plant certain thoughts in the minds of people and make them do what I want!”

And where does he see himself in a few years?

“My life goal is to change the perception of magic in India. Maybe after three or four years, I may establish a new form of magic. I don’t mind teaching, but only if people apply their own creativity, and not merely copy,” he says.

With more than 3000 fans on his Facebook page, karansinghmagic19, the second year BCom student, says, “I try to attend college…but honestly, I only go to take my exams.”
