FOUR PEOPLE were arrested by the Mangalwara police on Sunday for allegedly running a cricket betting racket. According to Additional SP (Old City) Deepak Verma, the bettors were arrested after a raid on a house on Chhaoni Road. The bettors were arrested along with a television set, five cellphones and other related paraphernalia.
The bets were made on the Australia-England limited overs matches, said CSP Shailendra Singh Chouhan. They did not place bets on the India-Sri Lanka matches because they were telecast with a delay of seven minutes, creating problems for bettors and punters as stakes were made for every ball and every over, he said. The house belongs to Raees Mandi, a history-sheeter who managed to escape.
Those arrested from the spot included Prakash Gyani, 38, a lab assistant at Motilal Vigyan Mahavidyalaya and Janak Baryani, 36, resident of Bus Stand. Subsequently, during interrogation with them, two punters viz. Naresh Aswani and Prakash Sen were caught from Bairagarh.
Nearly Rs 15,000 cash was recovered from the house apart from record of transaction worth Rs 2.5 lakh the police said. The hunt for Raees Mandi is on. The four accused have been booked under the Gambling Act.
