ASHOK PANDEY, a head constable, was bombed to death in the posh Civil Lines area here on Monday. Soon after, the killer was gunned down in a spine-chilling encounter with the police, witnessed by thousands.
Three persons, including a woman and a sub-inspector, sustained minor injuries in the two incidents. The police have picked up a person from the place of bombing.
Pandey, who earlier served in the SOG, was coming towards the Civil Lines crossing on SP Marg around 12.30 pm when one of the two miscreants sitting on the pillion of a mobike hurled a powerful crude bomb on him. It blew Pandey’s head to pieces. The bomb was hurled from such a close range that it also blew off the left palm of the miscreant who hurled it at Pandey.
Later, the miscreant tried to escape firing from a 9 mm pistol to keep the crowd at bay. He jumped several boundary walls of houses and managed to reach the backyard of the civil supplies office. Here he took a lawyer and two doctors hostage and wanted their vehicle. Meanwhile, the cops who were on his lookout also reached the spot and an exchange of fire took place. The miscreants even hurled another bomb, which injured a sub-inspector. The cops then used an AK-47 rifle to bring an end to the gory drama.
