Madhya Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has registered a criminal case against state Director General of Police Swaraj Puri for allegedly committing fraud in getting his son admitted to an engineering college in Indore under NRI quota, highly-placed sources said on Friday.
In compliance with an Indore court order on a petition seeking action against Puri for the alleged fraud, the EOW had initiated a probe into procedures followed for admission of his son Shreyas Puri into Shri Govindram Sakseria Institute of Technology and Sciences (SGSITS), they said.
EOW's Indore unit was investigating the case of alleged fraud, cheating and misuse of office, the sources said adding as part of the probe, a team from Indore had met Puri to gather information.
When contacted, Puri declined to comment on the developments.
The petitioner, former corporator Mahesh Garg, had alleged that Shreyas was admitted under NRI quota through one Babulal Somani who was described as his grandfather and sponsor.
The actual name of his grandfather was Vidyasagar Puri, Garg claimed.
Special Judge Akhilesh Pandya, on September 15, had directed the EOW to probe the matter and submit a report on September 27.
