The arrested persons had unleased a reign of terror in mineral-rich Badajamda and issued letters to mine and crusher owners demanding lakhs of rupees, Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Jha told a press conference.

Jha said the gang was operating under the banner of 'Jan Soshan Mukti Andolan' and issued the letters in its letter-head.

They were all wanted by the police in various criminal activities including loot, murder and dacoity, he said adding that the criminal gang collected levy in the name of Jharkhand Liberation Tiger, an ultra outfit.

Six country-made pistols, 12 live cartridges, two empty cartridges, three motorcycles and five mobile phones have been seized from the possession, Jha added.

Acting on a tip-off, he said the district police conducted raid and arrested six members of the gang from a spot in Chakradharpur.

The subsequent interrogation led police to arrest one Md. Shakeel, who used to supply arms to the gang, Jha said. Police was searching for three other members of the gang, who were reported at large, he said.
