Criminal shot dead outside court, assailants arrested

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly opening fire and killing a criminal in front of the court of Additional Sessions Judge Kuldeep Jain in the judicial complex here, police said on Wednesday.

Om Prakash, a resident of Butana village, was shot dead on Tuesday when he was being escorted by police back to the Karnal district jail after being produced in the court during hearing of a murder case.

He was undergoing life imprisonment for murdering one Azad Singh of his village and was also facing trial in another case relating to the murder of Phool Kumar of the same village.

Both the alleged assailants, identified as Lakshya alias Monu of Butana village and Rakesh alias Raka Balmiki of the same village, were arrested by police soon after the incident, police said.

Two pistols were recovered from their possession, they said.

Om Prakash's brother Sanjay Butania, who was also involved in as many criminal cases, was also shot dead in front of the court of the District and Sessions judge, Sonepat, on December 12, 2008, police said.
