CRPF Constable gets life in jail for killing senior officer

A local court on Wednesday sentenced a CRPF Constable to life imprisonment for killing a senior officer over two years ago.

Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge G Radha Rani found T Hanumanth Rao guilty of killing Additional DIG Syed Sirajuddin Ali Khan.

Rao was also convicted under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) in a related case, the Arms Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Properties Act.

Rao was awarded seven-year jail term each for attempt to murder and under the Arms Act. The sentences shall run concurrently, it said.

The court imposed a total fine of Rs 4,000 on him.

The prosecution had demanded capital punishment for the Constable, who shot dead Khan with an INSAS rifle at the CRPF Ground Centre office in Chandrayangutta here on January 31, 2008. He also made an attempt on the life of Deputy Commandant Kishore Arya, but was immediately overpowered.

Twenty-three witnesses were examined by the court.

Rao was reportedly depressed and frustrated as he was not getting proper medical treatment for his swollen leg at the CRPF clinic, police had said.
